Pennfield restaurant trashed by alleged vandals
PENNFIELD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It took 50 years to build the reputation of a Pennfield restaurant and according to the owner, just five years to destroy it.
Carl Angelo's Fine Foods has been synonymous with baseball for years in Calhoun County. The restaurant is right across the street from Bailey Park.
81-year-old Carl Angelo says someone trashed his former restaurant across from Bailey Park on purpose. It's been closed seven years because of it.
The County Prosecutor is now looking into the case to see if there's evidence anything criminal was involved.
"They tore the ceiling out which I don't know what the benefit of that woulda been if they remodeled," said Carl Angelo, Owner.
Carl Angelo shows us what was once his pride and joy.
"It was such a unique place and we had built such a history, they destroyed it all," said Angelo.
Broken windows, leaky ceilings and molded walls make the place unrecognizable.
"Made me sick to my stomach. It still does, I get sick looking at it," said Angelo.
Generations walked from Bailey Park to this hot spot. Angelo says his nightmare began after he signed over a land deal in 2001. He says the deal required anything changed to be approved by him.
"They weren't supposed to change a doorknob without my written permission," said Angelo.
Four years later he says the new person could no longer handle the business and forfeited his contract.
"All they had permission to do is to go in and clean it only. Not touch a thing not change a thing," said Angelo.
Angelo says instead they caused $500,000 in damage he says he tried to get former Calhoun County Prosecutor Susan Mladenoff to look into the case.
"Never called me never did anything so I finally went back and picked up my folder," said Angelo.
But is thankful prosecutor David Gilbert will finally take another look.
"What I'd like to see done is I'd like to see these done criminally cause that would be justice as far as I'm concerned," said Angelo.
The buyer of the land contract died in 2010, but Angelo says two others were involved in causing those damages.
He's nearing a deal with an auto parts company to buy the lot and tear down the restaurant.
