Dozens displaced by apartment fire

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dozens of people are displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex overnight.

Firefighters were called to the scene around midnight at the Woodstone Apartments inside the Parkview Hills complex on Woodstone Drive.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers tell Newschannel 3 there were flames when they arrived on scene but firefighters were able to get the fire under control in 30 minutes.

Firefighters on scene had to search through the building to wake up and rescue sleeping tenants.

Officers say one building is a total loss, affecting 48 units. Some units were damaged by fire, others suffered smoke and water damage.

One firefighter injured his back while helping people get out of the apartment complex. He is expected to be okay.

By 2:00 a.m. crews were putting out the hot spots.

KDPS Assistant Chief Brian Uridge tells Newschannel 3 the cause of the fire is unknown at this time but it appears to be electrical.

The department is still investigating. The American Red Cross is now looking to help displaced tenants.
