One year after devastating fire, a local baker looks forward

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Monday marked the one year anniversary of a fire that ripped through a downtown Kalamazoo treasure, destroying Sarkozy Bakery and all of its precious recipies.

However, on the anniversary the owner, Judy Sarkozy, wants everyone to know that good things are ahead.

Sarkozy says she hopes to have the new downtown location of her legendary bakery open by the summer.

The move and the new equipment will cost about $600,000, money that a lot of people in the community have helped to raise.

“Little kids are sending us their birthday money,” said Sarkozy. “The beauty of the response after the violence of the fire, you almost can’t hold those in your mind at once.”

Since the fire there have been various fundraisers held to help Sarkozy, which brought in around $80,000. Sarkozy says there will be one more big fundraiser coming up soon.

As soon as that’s announced, Newschannel 3 will pass the information along.
