Woman killed after being hit by car

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police are telling Newschannel 3 that a recent college graduate has died after being struck by a car in Kalamazoo.

The accident happened at the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Emajean Street, near the campus of Western Michigan University.

Police say the victim is a 22-year-old woman who attended WMU. They found her lying in the roadway when they arrived on the scene around 12:45 am Sunday morning.

WMU officials tell Newschannel 3 that the victim had attended the university and had graduated in December.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is still working to determine exactly what happened but they believe the woman was crossing the street alone when she was hit by a car.

A Sergeant at the scene said the driver of the car was not speeding or under the influence and is not expected to face any charges.

Friends of the victim say that she  lived in the area and was walking home by herself.

Newschannel 3 spoke to a WMU student who saw what happened. He said that seeing a tragedy like this first hand was the “shock of his life.”

“I saw a young lady get hit by a car and she was driven probably ten to fifteen feet,” said the student, who did not give his name. “This is unbelievable, I can’t believe this. You really can’t take anything for granted.”

Police are waiting on an autopsy to determine if the victim had been drinking. Police say the victim’s family has been notified but they are not yet releasing her name.
