Teen driving deaths rise sharply

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new report shows teen driving deaths rose sharply last year, reversing a decade-long trend.

A national group that represents state highway safety offices says deaths of 16- and 17-year-old drivers in crashes jumped 19 percent in the U.S. over the first half of 2012.

That's compared to the same period from the previous year.

This comes after a dramatic drop in teen driving deaths from 2000 to 2011.

The report does not say what may have been the cause of last year's sudden increase.
