Digital billboard at Angling Road no longer part of Portage deal
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A proposed billboard at Angling Road Elementary School has been dropped from a plan to add digital billboards to a number of school properties.
Last week, dozens of parents showed up at an informational meeting to protest the billboard.
Parents complained that it was unsafe to have such billboards installed near a playground, they would be too bright, and they would affect property value.
On Monday night, the school board announced that the proposed Angling Road Elementary billboard will no longer be a part of their contract with Adams Outdoor Advertising.
Three other billboards, however, are expected to move forward on school property, along I-94 at Portage Northern High School, as well as along US-131 at 12th Street Elementary.
The deal would give Portage Public Schools $2.7 million over the next 20 years, plus $40,000 in free advertising.
However, Adams Outdoor Advertising says in the next week, they'll be discussing with the district possible changes in that amount.
