Firefighter has fatal heart attack

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan firefighter has died after suffering a heart attack.

Nate Fruin with the Mattawan Fire Department died Tuesday night on the way to a fire on M-43 in Van Buren County. He was 22-years-old.

His friends say he loved helping people and always wanted to be a firefighter. Fruin had worked with the department since he was 16-years-old. He started as a cadet.

Tuesday night Fruin was in a support vehicle headed to a fire on M-43 when he started having chest pain. The driver pulled over and called for help. By the time it arrived he was in full cardiac arrest.

He died after arriving at the hospital.
