Visitation and funeral route plans for fallen hero

OTSEGO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - You can pay your respects to a local hero Wednesday. He was killed fighting for our country.

Visitation for Sgt. Mark Schoonhoven is from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego.

Sgt. Schoonhoven's funeral is Thursday morning at St. Margaret's Catholic Church.

Schoonhoven's mother is remembering her son as a devoted family man who was dedicated to serving his country.

“When they go over you know it can happen but you just keep saying and praying they're coming home, they're coming home, and he always had come home,” said Deb Schoonhoven. “I just wished they could have had more time. He liked to have lots of fun and and laugh make jokes and make other people laugh. He was a good father.”

Sgt. Schoonhoven died last month after being injured in an IED attack in Afghanistan.

The 38-year-old leaves behind a wife and six children.

Following Sgt. Schoonhoven's funeral Thursday, there will be a procession from the church to Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.

People are asked to line the procession route. It runs from M-89 in Otsego to Clark Road and South on Dickman Road to Fort Custer.
