NASA monitoring nearby asteroid

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An asteroid not connected to the meteorite that struck in Russia is expected to pass by the earth Friday.

They're calling it a cosmic coincidence. NASA will be monitoring the rock they call "2012 DA-14" and they will be live streaming coverage of its approach on their website.

The 150 foot asteroid is supposed to make it's closest streak past the earth around 2:00 in the afternoon.

NASA promises it will miss earth by 17,150 miles, but that's still closer than many communication and weather satellites.

The asteroid will be too faint to see with the naked eye.

The best viewing locations, with binoculars and telescopes, will be in Asia, Australia and Eastern Europe.
