Fish contamination drops in Muskegon, White lakes

MUKEGON, Mich. (AP) - Officials say progress is being made toward cleaning up toxic waste sites at two western Michigan lakes.
   
The Michigan Office of the Great Lakes says federal officials have concluded that Muskegon Lake and White Lake are not impaired by restrictions on wildlife and fish consumption.
   
That means fish in the two lakes no longer contain higher levels of PCBs and mercury than fish in other area waters. Advisories on eating fish from the lakes are still in effect, but they are no more restrictive than advisories for other nearby inland lakes.
   
Sediment removal projects over the past 15 years have reduced contamination levels in the fish.
   
Officials hope Muskegon Lake and White Lake eventually will be dropped from a list of the Great Lakes region's most contaminated sites.
