Victims identified in fatal Hartford crash
HARTFORD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police have identified the victims in a fatal crash in Van Buren County from Saturday night.
The crash, at the intersection of County Road 687 and 66th Avenue in Hartford Township claimed the life of Kathryn Maya, 56, of Kalamazoo, Lou Anne Holcomb, 56; Charlotte Sieber, 51; and the driver, Celeste Phillips, 67, all three of Hartford.
According to deputies, the women's car, as well as two others were approaching a two-way stop at that intersection.
One vehicle--a 1997 Dodge Caravan--driven eastbound on 66th Avenue by a 26-year-old woman from Watervliet, ran the stop sign and struck Phillips's car.
This caused Phillips's car to move into the opposite lane, where it struck a pickup truck head on.
The truck was driven by 57-year-old Thomas Stewart from Dowagiac.
Stewart was taken to the hospital for body trauma and lacerations to his hand.
The driver of the Caravan, whose name is not being released at this time, was uninjured.
Newschannel 3 has been told that charges will be requested, and depending on the actions of the prosecutor, they could range from either a civil infraction all the way up to involuntary manslaughter.
Deputies say that the driver of the Caravan was not drunk, and that weather most likely played a role, as conditions were somewhat slippery.
Newschannel 3 is continuing to look into the incident, which remains under investigation.
