Local church helps those displaced by deadly fire
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A number of families displaced by a deadly apartment fire are now moving into their new homes.
The fire at Interfaith Apartments in Kalamazoo killed three children on Monday. While the investigation continues into what caused the fire, emotions are running high for people at the complex who lost everything.
Mount Zion Baptist Church has been working since then to collect donations for a number of families who were displaced by that fire.
“I was at home, a neighbor came and banged on my door,” said Desiray Berry. “Oh, I lost everything, I lost a lot, my daughter’s memories are in that house.”
With the help of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Desiray Berry and her three children are now thankful for a new start.
“We’ve gotten clothes for adults and children to play with, TV sets, dining room sets,” said Deacon Ajamain Gardner. “We can provide some of those lost items, but nothing replaces the love and family feel you lose when you lose a residence.”
Mount Zion Baptist Church is still accepting donations to help those affected by the fire.
