Vaccine-resistant whooping cough in the U.S.
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The first cases of a vaccine-resistant strain of whooping cough have been found in the U.S.
Health officials say that could be why this year has been the worst year for whooping cough in the U.S. in the past six decades.
Whooping cough or pertussis is a highly contagious disease that can strike people at any age but is most dangerous to children.
Last year the CDC received reports of nearly 42,000 cases which included 18 deaths.
Experts don't think this strain is more deadly, but the shots may not work as well against it.
The new germ was first identified in France, and accounts for 14 percent of their total cases.
