Kalamazoo Public Safety officers train ice rescue techniques

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Public safety officers in Kalamazoo practiced rescue techniques Thursday, in cold water.

They jumped into the frigid waters of Woods Lake for ice rescue training.

The officers practiced three key techniques--getting themselves out of the water, a rescue rope technique, and the last resort, jumping into the water to pull a victim to safety.

"It's extremely important that we're trained to be able to respond to an ice rescue," explained KDPS training officer Rod Mox. "One, to keep our employees safe and also that we're able to do an efficient job and not cause any further harm to the people who fell through the ice."

KDPS officers aren't often called out to ice rescues, but they're trained just in case they're needed.
