Kalamazoo man arrested on multiple charges after dramatic car theft, pursuit
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police say they have arrested a 19-year-old Kalamazoo man on a number of charges after he stole a car.
Police say they took a call from an employee of Norfolk Railroad around 7:50 Saturday morning saying that someone had just stolen his vehicle.
That man says he had parked his 2002 Chevy Tahoe at the corner of Porter and Willard Street and had run into the railroad tower to sign out of work, leaving the vehicle unlocked and running. The man said that he had left the vehicle for only a short amount of time when he noticed an unknown male sitting in the driver’s seat.
As the vehicle’s owner ran to confront the man, the suspect put the vehicle in reverse and backed into a railroad sign. The owner then ran up to the vehicle and grabbed hold of the luggage rack as the suspect fled at a high rate of speed through the parking lot and toward a parked vehicle.
The owner says he was able to let go of the luggage rack moments before it sideswiped the parked vehicle and was uninjured.
The Tahoe then traveled down Porter Street where the suspect lost control and crashed into a utility pole head-on, causing both airbags to deploy. The suspect was able to continue driving north on Porter.
Responding officers say they, with the help of several concerned citizens, were able to locate the stolen Tahoe, which had been abandoned in the 2700 block of Slater Road.
Officers searched the area and brought in a K9 unit to help search.
A person matching the suspect description was spotted in the New Horizon Apartment Complex, but as officers attempted to make contact, he fled south across Gull Road.
After a short foot chase the suspect was arrested.
Police say the suspect, a 19-year-old man from Kalamazoo, had recently been released from prison and was on probation for home invasion.
He was arrested on several charges including carjacking, reckless driving and resisting and obstructing officers. He was also arrested for possession with intent to deliver imitation cocaine. He is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail pending arraignment.
