Feds: Honey laundering scheme has ties to Michigan

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Federal officials say they've uncovered a huge honey laundering scheme with ties to Michigan.

And no, that's not a typo. Honey laundering.

They say five people and two companies avoided paying duty taxes on the honey by illegally importing it from China, then claiming it was from other countries.

The duty totaled more than $180 million.

Federal officials say two of the nation's largest honey suppliers have agreed to pay fines--which includes Michigan-based Groeb Farms.

The Onsted, Mich. based company will pay $2 million in fines.

Some of the honey also contained unapproved antibiotics, but officials say no one got sick from it.

They're not sure how much honey was actually imported before the investigation started.
