Vigil planned after children die in apartment fire
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - People will gather in Kalamazoo Wednesday to remember three young children killed in an apartment fire.
Three-year-old twins Tevin and Teniya Williams and their little sister, one-year-old Tyonna Henderson, died Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in their apartment at the Interfaith Homes Complex.
The vigil will be held at 5pm at the Interfaith Homes Neighborhood Network Center, just down the street from where that tragic fire happened.
Investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire. They say the children were left home alone and could not escape.
Family members are trying to cope with the devastating loss.
Doreen Gardner, the associate minister at Mount Zion Baptist Church, says they're doing all they can to ease the family's pain.
"They need to be restored both physically and emotionally,” Gardner says, “but there are also physical needs that need to be restored. They lost everything.”
Several local groups are coming together to try and help the family.
The Douglass Community Association is collecting clothes and toys for the four-year-old surviving sister. She wears 3-T clothes, a size 4-T coat and size 9 shoes. You can drop these items off at the Mothers of Hope Office inside the Douglass Community Association.
Grace Mercy Luv Ministries has also set up a Facebook page for donations: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/437573516319122/
NewsChannel 3 will continue to follow the developments in the fire investigation and bring you updates as soon as they are available.
