Fire claims home in Decatur

DECATUR, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Multiple crews were out battling a fire in Decatur Saturday morning.

The Decatur Fire Chief says the home on E. Beers Street is probably a total loss.

The fire chief tells Newschannel 3 that the homeowner says that a small fire actually started early Saturday morning, sometime around 7:30 am. The homeowner told the chief that he was able to put that fire out himself so they did not contact officials and went back to sleep.

The homeowner says when he awoke again the home was filling with smoke.

There were three people inside the home at the time, no one was injured.

Crews from Decatur and Paw Paw fire departments responded to extinguish the flames.

Officials are working to determine the cause of the fire.
