Officers respond to crash near G Drive, Verona in Calhoun Co.

MARSHALL, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Three people are dead, and two are critically injured following a single car crash just off eastbound I-94 Monday.

Deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responded at around 3:30 p.m. to the area off eastbound I-94 near the Verona Road overpass.

Deputies believe that the vehicle, a 2013 Ford Explorer, was traveling eastbound when it ran off the highway and struck a tree, causing "severe damage."

There were five occupants inside the vehicle.

The driver, 55-year-old William Gatesy Jr., died at the scene, as did 53-year-old Dawn Gatesy and 28-year-old William Gatesy III.

A 27-year-old male passenger and an 81-year-old female passenger were transported to Bronson for treatment.

Their injuries are considered non-life threatening.

All five occupants are reportedly from the east side of the state.

The crash caused eastbound I-94 to be shut down for about an hour.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation.
