Mich. landfill fire damages gas collection system
KIMBALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A fire at a Michigan landfill has damaged part of the facility's methane gas collection system and temporarily reduced its ability to function.
The Times Herald of Port Huron reports contractors spotted flames Tuesday evening at the Smiths Creek Sanitary Landfill. Crews worked about four hours to put out the fire, which blackened an area of the landfill that's about 250 feet by 100 feet.
No injuries were reported.
Landfill manager Matt Williams says the fire was contained to the surface. The blaze melted the top of one of the landfill's methane gas extraction wells. He said that crews will determine whether the well equipment can be salvaged or must be replaced.
The landfill is located in St. Clair County's Kimball Township, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
