Hearings over education standards begin
LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan lawmakers are deciding whether they should continue to push stricter standards in reading and math.
A House subcommittee will meet Tuesday, holding the first of several hearings on Common Core State Standards.
The state education board adopted the standards in 2010, but republicans recently blocked state funding for them, concerned about the intrusion into local schools.
The legislature needs to authorize moving ahead before the state can spend money on common core.
Many schools have already started to implement the new standards.
