Minnesota enacts smartphone kill switch law

MINNESOTA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Minnesota is the first state to enact a law requiring smartphones and tablets sold in the state have a remote shut off feature.

The kill switch bill will take full effect in July of 2015.

People who report a kill switch-equipped phone lost or stolen will be able to disable it and wipe the data clean by contacting the carrier.

Similar bills are in the works in California, New York and Illinois.

Federal legislation is also pending.
