Roommates find $41K in couch in NYC

NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A group of roommates in New York City made a big, rich find as they bought what they thought was just a plain, old couch.

It turns out there was $41,000 in cash in the pillows.

There was one lone envelope in the couch, with a name on it.

So, instead of pocketing their find, they tracked down the previous owner to return the money.

"This was her life savings and she actually said something really beautiful, like, 'this is my husband looking down on me, and this was supposed to happen,'" said Cally Guasti, who found the money.

The woman told the trio she had been stashing the money in the couch for years, and family members who didn't know donated the couch.

The roommates didn't go away empty handed, either; she did give them $1,000 as a reward.
