12 confirmed dead in avalanche on Mt. Everest

NEPAL (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - At least 12 people are now confirmed dead in an avalanche on Mount Everest.

Officials say the dead are local tour guides. Another three people are seriously injured.

The avalanche hit Friday morning on a route used to climb the world's highest peak.

Officials say a group of about 50-people, mostly sherpas from Nepal, were hit by the avalanche at more than 20,000 feet.

The guides were headed to an area to fix the ropes for climbers.
