Two former popes canonized

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Roman Catholic Church has two new saints Monday morning.

In the church's highest honor, 20th century pontiffs John the 23rd and John Paul the Second were canonized in a special mass Sunday.

It's a historic move. This is the first time in the church's history that two popes were declared saints at the same time.

In the brief but solemn ceremony Pope Francis blessed relics from each of the pontiffs.

Nearly a million pilgrims filled St. Peter's Square for Sunday's mass.
