2 dead in Naval Base shooting in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Virginia (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - We're getting some new information about a double fatal shooting at a naval station in Norfolk, Virginia.

Navy officials say a civilian entered the guard base Monday night and approached a Navy ship.

Ship security officers confronted the man, then officials say they got into a struggle.

That's when the man apparently grabbed the gun of a petty officer and used it to shoot a sailor.

Navy security officers shot and killed the suspect.

Navy officials say the suspect had permission to be on base, but it's not clear if he was allowed aboard the destroyer.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is leading the investigation.
