Truce fails to hold in Ukraine

UKRAINE (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Violence in the Ukraine has created a deepening clash between east and west.

An Associated Press reporter has counted 18-bodies at Independence Square.

Thursday morning a meeting with foreign ministers and the Ukrainian president was underway.

Wednesday night Ukraine's President announced a truce, which clearly didn't hold.

He says the demonstrators are trying to overthrow the government.

The protestors, armed with cobblestones and Molotov cocktails, say the government is corrupt and can no longer be trusted.

President Obama says Ukraine's government has to stop provoking the conflict.

"They have the primary responsibility to prevent the terrible violence we've seen. To withdraw riot police. To work with the opposition to restore security and human dignity," said President Obama.

The protests started after Ukraine's President rejected a trade deal with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia.

This has been the deadliest outbreak of violence since the protests began last November.
