Documents reveal hundreds of priests defrocked in sex abuse scandal

GENEVA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Documents obtained by the Associated Press reveal the staggering number of priests accused of molesting children.

The documents show Pope Benedict XVI defrocked nearly 400 priests over just two years for sex acts against children.

The statistics from 2011 to 2012 show a dramatic increase from 2008 to 2009, when 170 priests were removed.

Prior to that, the Vatican only revealed the number of alleged cases of sexual abuse it had received.

The document was prepared to help the Holy See defend itself before a U.N. committee this week in Geneva.
