Rescue mission to stranded ship delayed by fog

ANTARCTICA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mission to rescue more than 70 people stranded in sea ice off the coast of Antarctica is being put on hold right now due to fog.

The scientific research vessel has been trapped since last Tuesday.

74 scientists, tourists, journalists and crew are aboard the ship, which left New Zealand last month.

The mission was to retrace the 1911 journey of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson.

It's early summer in the southern hemisphere, but since the boat is so far south, blizzards are a year-round threat.
