Helicopter sent to rescue ship passengers in Antarctica

ANTARCTICA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The team of researchers stuck in Antarctica aren't sitting around Tuesday morning. They're getting ready for rescue!

"It's the 31st of December, at 3:00 p.m. We've just learned the Aurora cutter can't reach us, so (indistinct) preparing the helipad, by getting the team to stop down in this snow and ice," said one member of the team.

They're working to make a landing pad for a helicopter from the Chinese icebreaker so it can air-lift them out.

The Russian expedition ship got stuck near the South Pole on Christmas Day.

More than 70 people are on board. They're studying the effects of climate change in the region.
