12-year-old charged with bullying
STAMFORD, Conn. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Stamford police sent a strong message to students and the community when they charged a 12-year-old girl with bullying.
"She did seem remorseful, crying, didn't understand the magnitude until she got here," said Lt. Diedrich Hohn.
The victim was taunted, teased and tortured both verbally and physically.
So much so a 13-year-old Stamford teen talked about taking her own life and she says a 12-year-old classmate is to blame.
Now police have charged that girl with disorderly conduct to send a strong message that bullying is unacceptable.
"I don't think that's right, even though she was bullying someone, she's only twelve!" said Stamford freshman Veena Weerakoon.
"I think she knew what she was doing was wrong, and her getting arrested is appropriate," said Stamford sophomore Juliana Ferraro.
Prosecutors say the 12-year-old will likely be ordered to attend anti-bullying classes, maybe even get counseling.
Meantime, officers are also planning to hold seminars on bullying prevention in school.
