NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Smokers under 21 will soon be barred from buying cigarettes in New York City.
The New York City Council is raising the tobacco-purchasing age from 18 to 21. That includes electronic cigarettes as well.
By passing the bill Wednesday, New York became the most populous place in the U.S. to raise the tobacco-buying age that high.
Right now 18 is the federal minimum.
