Father of stowaway child speaks out
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The father of a 9-year-old stowaway is speaking out for the first time.
The story of the boy who flew to Vegas on his own has gone viral. Now the boy's father in Minneapolis says he's struggled with the boy's behavior.
"We're not bad parents. We didn't think nothing of it. We thought he was at a friend's house," said the boy's father. "I don't know what to do. I love my son. I'm not giving up on my son. He's just confused, so can anyone please help me? Please?"
It was late Wednesday morning when his nine-year-old left their north Minneapolis neighborhood.
He says he had no idea his son would ride light rail to the airport and somehow get past security and board a plane for Las Vegas.
They didn't become concerned until Thursday morning. When mom called police to report the child missing, they learned he was in Las Vegas.
"I don't understand. You got so much security, check at these airports, how can you let a nine-year-old sneak past security, get on a plane without anyone stopping him, questioning, him or anything," said the father.
The boy's father says they've been asking for help since his son was five, but were told the child had not done anything significant to warrant special assistance.
He also says right now the boy is suspended from school as a result of his behavior issues.
