Man acts out Grand Theft Auto
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An Auburn University lacrosse player is behind bars after he allegedly tried to bring the new Grand Theft Auto video game to life.
According to police, on Saturday around 2:30 20-year-old Zachary Burgess allegedly stole a truck, kidnapped a woman and hit several parked cars in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He took the truck after the owner pulled into a bar parking lot and left it running.
Police say the woman was able to escape from the vehicle before Burgess left the parking lot.
"I think I was lucky to get out. And I didn't think I was going to be able to get out, because he was just backwards, forwards, doors were locked, he wasn't listening to me, he was ignoring me," said Monique Jiarrusso.
"One of his statements was that he wanted to see what it was to be a Grand Theft Auto individual. What it felt like, I guess to take a car and strike several vehicles at a high rate of speed," L'Jean McKneely of the Baton Rouge PD.
Police say he hit several cars and gates before stopping the totaled truck less than a mile from where he stole it.
Burgess was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, nine counts of hit and run and simple kidnapping.
