Mystery surrounds teen's death in southern Ga.
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mystery is unfolding in southern Georgia involving the death of a 17-year-old boy.
Federal authorities are being asked to look into the death of Kendrick Johnson.
His body was found 8 months ago, but just how and why he died has local authorities saying one thing, and his parents another.
The 17-year-old was found dead in a Georgia high school gym on January 11th.
His body was stuck upside down inside a rolled-up floor mat.
A state medical examiner ruled the death accidental asphyxiation, but his parents don't believe it, and had the body exhumed.
The second autopsy shows there may be more to his death.
"They portrayed him, built him up to be dumb enough to fall over head-first into a mat, when we know Kendrick," his mother Jacquelyn Johnson. "He lifted weights every day. We know he could just pick those mats up and throw them to the side."
Dr. William Anderson, who performed the second autopsy, said that there was blunt force trauma the head and neck area, indicating he took "at least one blow to the neck."
The Johnsons are asking for the Justice Department to reopen the case and hoping that someone who knows something will come forward.
