Legislators considering state of the art license plate
SOUTH CAROLINA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Lawmakers in one state are considering a new state-of-the-art license plate.
South Carolina is looking into these electronic plates to try to reduce the number of illegal drivers.
The e-tag would look like a normal plate, but if your car is stolen or your license is suspended the DMV would send a signal to your e-tag and that message would appear on it.
"It's not an LCD or an LED. What it's made of is electronic paper. It's a new technology that allows you to hold the image with no power whatsoever for over 10 years. The only time it needs power is when you're changing the status or the image on the plate," said David Findlay of Compliance Innovations.
The company behind the electronic license plates say when you renew your tag instead of putting a new sticker on it the DMV would just automatically update it.
