Local teacher facing sex charges
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A local teacher is facing three counts of criminal sexual conduct.
The charges come from the allegations that he had in an inappropriate relationship with a student.
32-year-old Michael Hagedorn was arrested Thursday after months of investigation.
Earlier this winter, the teacher at Marshall Academy Charter School was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old female student.
Detectives say the investigation started in February after some concerned adults came forward.
But a source close to the case says the misconduct could have been going on months before the authorities were told.
Michael Hagedorn was arraigned Friday afternoon in Calhoun County Court.
Hagedorn appeared by video because he's still being held in the Calhoun County Jail.
The court appearance was the result of several months of investigation into the allegation that the married father of three had sexual contact with one of his 17-year-old students.
A source close to the girl's family told Newschannel 3 that investigators were waiting for evidence of the relationship to be taken off an iPod.
“This is a case that's had a long investigation. I've been aware of it and involved with the detectives at least since March of this year. We are preparing to face the charges and I don't think there's any danger that the client will flee the jurisdiction. I don't believe he is a danger to the public,” said Hagedorn’s attorney, James D. Mequio.
The source said the alleged victim's family had their concerns about Hagedorn getting close to the teen girl and believe he preyed on her.
Newschannel 3 learned in March that the 32-year-old was put on leave from the school after the allegations surfaced.
“The people would ask that because of the severity of the circumstances that this is an assaultive case, that the court set a higher cash bond and institute a no contact with the victim,” said Calhoun County Prosecutor Patrice Lewis.
Hagedorn was given a $100,000 bond.
Investigators say there's no reason to believe there are any other victims.
The teacher was given one count of criminal sexual conduct in the 3rd degree, and two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the 4th degree.
Newschannel 3 tried several times to reach the school superintendent but hasn’t heard back.
Hagedorn will be back in court June 19th for a preliminary exam.
