Crews remain on scene of Battle Creek fire
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Hot spots lingered Saturday morning after a large fire in Battle Creek.
The fire at Cereal City Recycling has been burning since Friday afternoon.
Saturday morning crews were still on scene putting out hot spots.
Seven local fire departments responded to the facility on 6 ½ Mile Road Friday afternoon.
Employees who were leaving the building say they heard a popping noise, then lots of paper, wood and plastic began to burn.
Smoke from the fire could be seen from miles around.
Firefighters who responded had to deal with more than just fire, two firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion and the wind caused a number of problems as well.
“The fire grew in such magnitude, so quickly with the wind picking up, our big concern was the Consumers Power lines that came down, and of course as luck would have it, they fell on top of the truck,” said Mike Olson, Emmett Township Public Safety Director. “Nobody was injured fortunately.”
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but investigators will soon be sifting through the destruction to look for clues.
