Pipeline fire still burning in Louisiana bayou

LOUISIANA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A fire raging in a coastal Louisiana bayou where a tugboat struck a gas pipeline is expected to burn throughout Thursday.

Officials say they don't expect the flames to burn out till late Thursday night or possibly Friday.

The fire started Wednesday night when a tug pushing an oil barge struck a liquefied natural gas pipeline.

Four people were injured, one critically.

U.S. Coast Guard officials now say the area was clearly marked as a pipeline area and that the tug was out of the navigation channel.

"The tug and barge was in the middle. It had taken down some of the white stakes and was in the middle of that area," said Ens. Tanner Stiehl of the U.S. Coast Guard.

No oil had spilled as of Wednesday evening.

The Coast Guard says what appeared to be pockets of oil on the water turned out to be ash from the burned gas.
