X-rays negative for Tigers' Hunter

Updated: Wednesday, August 6, 2014

NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Many fans saw their thoughts first turn to a season-ending injury for Tiger Torii Hunter after he was hit on the hand in the 9th inning in Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees.

Hunter says that was his first reaction as well.

But x-rays proved negative, and the veteran is listed as day-to-day by manager Brad Ausmus.

The official word is a contusion, with a broken blood vessel.

Ausmus says he grew concerned with the way Hunter reacted to some of the tests given by trainer Kevin Rand.

Hunter will likely get a rest Wednesday night.

Justin Verlander will take the mound for the third game of the series.
