KVCC Cancels Women's Basketball Season
KALAMAZOO, Mich (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kalamazoo Valley Community College has canceled its women's basketball season, Athletic Director Russ Panico confirmed to Newschannel 3 on Wednesday.
The Cougars' roster has dwindled from fifteen players to five. Panico said of the ten players no longer with the team, one was dismissed for disciplinary reasons, four were medically unable to play, three quit the team, and two were academically ineligible.
Panico said he made the recommendation to Mike Collins, KVCC's Executive VP for Enrollment and Campus Operations, on Tuesday, citing safety reasons for the five members of the team.
Of the five players still with the program, two are sophomores and three are freshman; Panico also said none of the freshman have committed to playing beyond this season.
Despite that, Panico thinks the team can return next season.
"We're confident we can have a good group next year," Panico said. "And hopefully, we'll return to the top (of the MCCAA)."
If the Cougars do return next year, Panico said they would be issued a one-year postseason ban by the MCCAA, and be placed on probation by the conference.
