Best of Western Michigan sports in 2017
KALAMAZOO, Mich. —
The Western Michigan Broncos athletic programs had a year to remember in 2017. It started just two days into the new year when the Broncos football team made the program's first ever appearance in the Cotton Bowl and proved they could play with the big boys giving Wisconsin all they could handle in a 24-16 loss.
Just a couple of months later WMU hockey earned a bid to the NCAA Regionals, but that is where their season would end after a 5-4 loss to Air Force.
The Broncos would cap off the year with men's soccer making a run for the ages going 17-3-1 shattering numerous school records and reaching the third round of the NCAA Tournament. During that run they would find the program's first All-Americans with Portage Northern product Brandon Bye earning first team honors and keeper Drew Shepherd picking up second team recognition.
