BRANCH COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police say White Pigeon Sergeant William Burgoyne was involved in a one car crash where witnesses say his car ran off Mendon Road in Sherwood Township.
Sgt. Burgoyne was off-duty at the time of the crash.
When troopers responded they arrested Burgoyne on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.
MSP is not saying what his blood alcohol level was but he was booked into the Branch County Jail.
In White Pigeon today reaction was mixed about what the officer is accused of doing.
"They should know better but they are human and they have a private life so if they want to do that on their own time, that's their business," says Jeanie Webster who lives in White Pigeon.
Burgoyne has been with the police department for around 20 years. On Monday the White Pigeon Police Chief refused to talk to Newschannel 3 about the arrest.
But the city's attorney Andrew Rogness tells us Burgoyne remains on the job. He says, the city needs to do its due diligence, he says its agreement with the police union doesn't let it take action just based on allegations.
And he says once he gets a police report of what happened he will meet with the police chief and make a decision on any discipline.
Burgoyne posted bail and is no longer in the Branch County Jail.
