(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Food and Drug Administration documents have revealed that the agency should have acted sooner to prevent the deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak.
Tuesday the Energy and Commerce Committee headed by Congressman Fred Upton are scheduled to meet with the FDA Commissioner to examine facts that surround the outbreak.
The outbreak has claimed the lives of 53 people and has hit Michigan the hardest.
Out of the 53 dead, 15 are from Michigan, including three from Upton's district.
259 of the nearly 750 people who are sick or suffering from the infections are from Michigan.
The infections were due to contaminated steroids from a Massachusetts pharmaceutical company and have since been recalled.
