DETROIT, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It may not be an official holiday on calendars, but in Detroit opening day is a day off work, to be at the ballpark.
"Opening day is a holiday in Detroit and the suburbs, if you're not here, the Tigers don't matter to you," says fan Kevin Foisy.
“We wanted to be down here because it's opening day, it's like a holiday here in Detroit," says fan Brittney Signorelli.
But this holiday sometimes requires a little deception.
"I had to work today, called in sick," said one fan.
"I go to Eastern... and I may have missed class today to come here," says Steven Ohotzke.
Or sometimes, as was the case with a group of employees from a Southgate salon, work closes down.
"We all shut down the salon today to be here and to have a good time all together," says Christina Stach.
With everything going on, the game itself was at times an afterthought, but Tigers fans have reasons to be optimistic.
"Tigers look good, Tigers are going to go a long way. They should finish first and win the pennant, after that, we'll see," said a pair of fans.
The Tigers did win their home opener 8 to 3 over the Yankees.
