State Police: Barry Co. suspect shot self before officers shot him story image
BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New information surfaced on Wednesday surrounding an officer-involved shooting in Barry County from last weekend.

On Saturday, February 9, the Barry County Sheriff's Department responded to a domestic situation that they found involved a suicidal suspect and his wife.

The suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Ralph Elliot, was reportedly armed with two handguns.

According to the Michigan State Police, Elliot handed over one handgun to his wife, but then produced a second handgun, a .32 caliber weapon.

State Police reported that Elliot fired two shots--one into the driveway, and a non-lethal shot which struck him in "the head area."

At that point, Barry County Sheriff's deputies set up a perimeter around the residence and established communication.

Just under a half-hour later, Elliot emerged from the house and approached the officers, ignoring several warnings along the way to stop his approach.

Deputies deployed a taser, which did not subdue Elliot, and at that point, they say he reached into his front pocket.

Deputies then fired five shots with what state police described as a .223 caliber patrol rifle, striking Elliot twice in the hip area.

First aid was administered on scene, but Elliot later died at Pennock Hospital.

State Police emphasize that the case remains under review, and an investigation is ongoing.
