MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The shootings at Sandy Hook in December pushed the debate about gun control back into the spotlight in the United States.
Some have been asking for more control over assault weapons and requiring background checks for all gun purchases among other things.
Meanwhile, gun advocates have been looking for other solutions such as armed guards in schools.
As the national debate continues, some states have been taking action on their own.
Just last week, Maryland and Connecticut passed some of the strongest gun laws in the nation.
In Michigan a bipartisan group of Senators has joined together to introduce the Excellence in Mental Health Act as an amendment to a gun safety bill that will be in front of the Senate next week. Supporters of that act say that action is needed on more than guns.
Senator Debbie Stabenow joined Newschannel 3 over the phone to talk about the proposed act.
