KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's a story the NEWSCHANNEL 3 I-Team has been digging into and now the Kalamazoo City Commission has approved handling parking enforcement on its own instead of contracting with an outside company. In areas outside of the downtown, it will now have three part time employees handle the process of writing tickets.
NEWSCHANNEL 3 has been going through city contracts, and for more than twenty years the city has contracted with and paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a company called Central City Parking to handle the job.
The city says making the switch now will save between $200,000 and $300,000 each year. The city plans to use that savings to hire an additional two to three full time public safety officers to be on the streets.
Today we asked the Kalamazoo City Manager why the switch didn't happen sooner. We'll show you just how much the city has been paying Central City Parking to handle ticket writing for years. That story tonight on NEWSCHANNEL 3.
