ALLEGAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A building inspector in Allegan County accused of sexually assaulting a mentally incapacitated teen was due in court Wednesday, but his hearing was delayed.
Paul Shamblin is charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault in the 3rd degree, two counts of CSC in the 4th degree and one count of aggravated indecent exposure.
The alleged victim is 18 but doctors say she has the mental capacity of a 1st-grader.
Investigators say the victim moved into Shamblin's Valley Township home when his wife was hospitalized last September and that the relationship turned sexual.
Wednesday's hearing was to determine if there's enough evidence to send Shamblin to trial. A continuance was granted because the state is trying to get special permission to keep the victim from having to testify in front of Shamblin. Right now they need to prove she's developmentally impaired.
Shamblin's next hearing date has not yet been set.
