HASTINGS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police are warning people not to fall victim to a scam that cost a Hastings woman hundreds of thousands of dollars.
They say someone called the elderly woman, claiming she had won the "Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes," but that she had to send them money for taxes before they could send her the winnings.
Over the next several months they used this story to steal more than $350,000 from her.
Police say you should never send money to unknown people or businesses and if something sounds to good to be true you should assume it's a scam.
